Except you can't turn, assuming there is another setup like this on the other side of the car. And if it's just one side, you couldn't turn right, and only slightly left.

I'm assuming that's what the belt tensioner thingy is for on the expanded view. While turning in, it would tighten and take in the slack. While turning out, the additional tension would loosen the belt.
